American Botanical Council

The American Botanical Council’s mission is to provide education using science-based and traditional information to promote responsible use of herbal medicine — serving the public, researchers, educators, healthcare professionals, industry and media.

Since 1988, the American Botanical Council (ABC) has been educating consumers, healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, industry and the media on the safe and effective use of herbs and medicinal plants. ABC is an independent, nonprofit organization supported by thousands of members around the world.

The ABC Sacred Seed Sanctuary is located on its Case Mill Homestead in Austin, Texas. Much of the focus is to incorporate the traditional medicines of the Native American tribes, Mexican immigrants, and European settlers of the area.

The project was started in May 2010 with the soil solarization of an existing Southwest Pollinator Garden that already had some of the plants in it that ABC staff wanted to plant in its Sacred Seeds Garden. By May 2012, ABC staff, interns, and volunteers had planted 22 species. An additional 40 species are being researched for their potential inclusion in the garden.
